Why Cruise the South Pacific?

Choosing to cruise the South Pacific Islands means being able to indulge in luxury and comfort as well as relaxation. One of the biggest drawcards of cruising the South Pacific is that sailing eliminates the hassle of needing multiple flights and hotel stays and allows you to take in the destinations you are going to without having any worry in the back of your mind.

Moreover, with so many itineraries available, sailing in the South Pacific region allows everyone to be able enjoy something different, whether its food, adventure, entertainment, relaxation or culture. Cruising is the perfect way for everyone to enjoy the South Pacific, from single adventurers, to couples and families.

TOP DESTINATIONS TO VISIT IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC

1.  Fiji

Fiji is one of the gems of the South Pacific islands, it offers a rich blend of beautiful landscapes, vibrant culture and abundant activities. When you think of Fiji you think of its stunning crystal-clear waters, white sandy beaches and lush rainforests. This island is a visual paradise for travellers and is one of the number one destinations in the South Pacific people want to sail to.

One of Fiji’s most popular attractions is the Garden of the Sleeping Giant, a natural park with 30-40 different varieties of orchids as well as native tropical vegetation. Visitors may follow the jungle trail around a big lily pond and through natural Fijian trees.

The Kula WILD Adventure Park has something for everyone. Spread across 28 acres in three valleys, it is the largest family fun park, including water slides, a splash pool and a roller coaster zip line.

Those who prefer the outdoors will appreciate the opportunity to walk the kilometer-long boardwalk through the rainforest, observe marine exhibits of Fiji’s coral, and explore the aviary to see the different fauna. Visitors may take a self-guided tour of the adventure park, request a behind-the-scenes tour, or even offer their children the opportunity to be park rangers for the day.

When heading to Fiji, the ship may dock at both Suva and Lautoka. However, when visiting Dravuni Island, cruise ships will anchor close offshore, and tender boats will run throughout the day to transport you to the beach.

2. New Caledonia and Vanuatu

These are the main three main islands you will see when you start looking at cruises to the South Pacific Islands. These islands are known not only for their beaches but also the adventurous activities and tours that they offer, such as ziplining, snorkeling, kayaking, skybridge and more.

Vanuatu is a top destination in the South Pacific as it provides travellers with a tropical vacation spot with breathtaking and tranquil scenery. Port Villa is Vanuatu’s capital, and the main attractions are about a 30-minute drive away.

Some of the natural wonders include Mt Yasur, one of the most active and accessible volcanoes; as part of the tour, you’ll be guided to ask the gods for permission to climb the volcano when you first arrive. Protective gear is supplied, including ash jackets and goggles. Then it’s time to watch the spew!

The Blue Lagoon, located approximately half an hour from Port Villa, offers a variety of activities such as exploring waterfalls, turtle adventures, buggy adventure trips, as well as simply having a leisurely swim in the crystal waters of the Blue Lagoon. Finally, the Hideaway Island Marine Reserve, that has the world’s only underwater post office!

New Caledonia is a French territory known for its stunning landscapes and vibrant culture, with Noumea being the capital city.  New Caledonia is one of the most popular South Pacific sailing destination thanks to its rich marine life. The New Caledonian Barrier Reef is the world’s second largest coral reef system with exceptional snorkeling and diving opportunities.

In New Caledonia, ships dock at the Gare Maritime Terminal, located in the heart of Noumea’s island port. From there, it’s just a short distance to the city of Noumea. Cruise ships also dock at Port Vila’s main wharf, which is a brief taxi ride from the main street. For Mystery Island, despite its name, it’s not a mystery spot! You’ll be on a tender, as the ship docks on Tanna Island, which is a short distance from Mystery Island.

3. Solomon Islands

Another top sailing destination in the South Pacific are the famed Solomon Islands, which provide some of the greatest diving opportunities in the world! Its waters are immaculate, with well maintained reefs, World War II wrecks, and a plethora of marine life, including barracudas, parrotfish, sea fans, and pygmy seahorses. Other activities that make the Solomon Islands such a popular South Pacific cruising destination include visiting Lubaria Island, where J.F.K was stationed during WWII, exploring the islands’ endangered bird sanctuary, and taking hiking and diving beach tours.

To be able to get to the beautiful islands, the cruise ship will have to drop its anchor and then you will have to use tender boats, the cruise lines are very efficient with this, however, if you want to make the most of your day I would recommend booking a shore excursion through the Cruise line as you get off the boat first.

4. Bora Bora

Bora Bora, an island group in French Polynesia, is renowned for its incredible beaches and vibrant marine life. Matira Beach, often hailed as the world’s best beach, I s amajor attraction and a must-see in Bora Bora.

For animal lovers, whale watching is one of the top outdoor activities you can do in Bora Bora, offering the chance to see Orcas, Whale sharks, Tigersharks, Hammerhead sharks, Lemon sharks, Jackfish and Turtles during certain seasons. It’s easy to see why Bora Bora is one of the top destinations in the South Pacific.

When visiting Bora Bora there is no pier that is large enough for a cruise ship to dock at, so they will drop their anchor in the lagoon and then tenders will drop you off at Vaitape, which is the main town of Bora Bora, to ensure you are getting as much time in port as you can. It’s recommended that you book an shore excursion as that way you can get off the ship first!

5. Tahiti

Tahiti is French Polynesia’s biggest island and the heart and soul of the South Pacific. Tahiti’s markets are stunning; they are an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich food and culture, and they provide a diverse assortment of local vegetables, apparel, crafts, and jewellery. They also offer many half-day private island tours, such as being taken out on a Catamaran for a snorkelling or a private tour on a bus, which allows you to see most of the island’s highlights such as Arahurahu Marae, Faarumai Waterfall, and Vaipahi Water Gardens.

The South Pacific is a cruiser’s dream come true. Whether you’re lounging on Fiji’s stunning beaches, soaking in Vanuatu’s vibrant culture, or exploring the serene beauty of New Caledonia, there’s something for everyone. Bora Bora’s luxury, Tahiti’s rich history, and the untouched paradise of the Solomon Islands add even more to the mix.

Whether you’re after adventure, relaxation, or a bit of both, these destinations promise unforgettable moments on the open sea, and Cruiseabout can make it happen! Learn more about the South Pacific with our in-depth guide, or get in touch with us to help you with your trip planning.
